Daily Journal 2/18/26

This is two mornings in a row now that I’ve been awake before 3am. Yesterday, it was a combination of the television, Dallas making bread on my back, and Mary painting something in the kitchen at 2am. This morning, it was because I woke up from a dream about the zine I want to start this year. (If you missed that announcement, it’s in the newsletter from two weeks ago — scroll past the introductory essay).

Anyway, that’s an extra two hours of work time today, and I can use it. Currently deep into one of the two new anthologies Chris and I are editing, and also this new short story for Jamie Flanagan’s The Shining anthology.

The twentieth-anniversary edition of TAKE THE LONG WAY HOME went on sale this past Monday everywhere except on Nook, because their platform is run by two geriatric hamsters and an ungreased wheel.

All across the world, people suddenly vanish in the blink of an eye. From their cars during the rush hour commute. From shopping malls. Their homes. Their beds. Even from the arms of their loved ones. Airline pilots. World leaders. Teachers. Parents. Children. Gone.

Steve, Charlie, and Frank were just trying to get home when it happened. Now they find themselves left behind and wishing they'd disappeared, too. Trapped in the ultimate traffic jam, they watch as civilization collapses, claiming the souls of those around them. God has called his faithful home, but the invitations for Steve, Charlie, and Frank got lost. Now they must set off on foot through a nightmarish post-apocalyptic landscape in search of answers. In search of God. In search of their loved ones. And in search of home.

This special edition includes a brand-new Afterword looking back on the novella's history.
