We had hoped to see Obsession last night, but the theater was sold out. Pretty impressive for a horror movie that’s been in theaters for over a month and on a Wednesday night! So instead we visited our friends at the State Theater Vintage Emporium, where Mary bought TSR trading cards, and I bought some vinyl — Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Bryan Adams, Led Zeppelin, and The Rolling Stones. We might try to catch the movie again this evening.

With the new Masters of the Universe film now in theaters, this seems like a good time to remind you about the HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, VOL. 2: ORIGINS OF ETERNIA trade paperback, which collects — among other things — the MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE: ORIGIN OF HORDAK comic I wrote.

Jeff Strand has written a pretty good thought piece about the HWA and the Bram Stoker Awards. You can read it here.

Women In Horror Year: Day 55

Dead Folk by Katherine Silva

Paperback - eBook - Audiobook

Once upon a time, a woman thought she made peace with her grief. As she tended the dying land, she befriended a fox: a symbol that reminded her of her beloved father who died at the hands of a selfish doctor. But grief is perennial and after she loses her new friend, she discovers hope was just an illusion, too. Magic meanders back into her life and with it, a hunger for retribution unlike any felt before.

Dead Folk is John Wick meets His Dark Materials in a sequel from the best-selling May release, Undead Folk.

As it says in the sales copy, Dead Folk is a sequel to Undead Folk (which I featured here for Women In Horror Year way back on Day 13). Of that first novella, I said in part: “It’s Grief Horror colliding with Post-Apocalyptic and Zombie fiction, but there’s also a dose of Magic Realism and a sprinkling of Folk Horror. In lesser hands, such a mix of ingredients might have made for a mess, but Katherine Silva deftly weaves them together with confidence and grace and heart.”

The same holds true for this sequel, except that everything is cranked up higher, and thus, that also holds true for the emotional response she evokes from the reader. This one broke my heart even more than the first one did. When I get the opportunity, I’d like to sit down with Katherine and learn the origin of this three-book series, because I suspect it’s coming from some place deep inside of her — a place that might be painful but cathartic to access. If so, bless her for that, because it is a gift for readers.

I’ve not read the third book in the series yet but it’s coming up soon on my TBR pile. Will report back when I do. In the meantime, Dead Folk is available in paperback, eBook, and audiobook from Strange Wilds Press.
