Apex will unveil the cover for the forthcoming paperback edition of BENEATH THE LOST LEVEL later today. I’ll post it here on the site, as well.

As you know, I’ve given each of the podcasts their own permanent page here on the site. KEENVERSATIONS and HOW TO SURVIVE 2025 are now up-to-date. Classic episodes of DEFENDERS DIALOGUE and THE HORROR SHOW WITH BRIAN KEENE are being added slowly, at a rate of two episodes of each per day. (Those shows ran for years, and there are a lot of episodes in the archives to go through).

Women In Horror Year: Day 36

Seeing Things by Sonora Taylor

Paperback - eBook

Abby Gillman has discovered that with growing up, there comes a lot of blood. But nothing prepares her for the trail of blood she sees in the hallway after class - or the ghost she finds crammed inside an abandoned locker.

No one believes Abby, of course. She’s only seeing things. As much as Abby wants to be believed, what she wants more is to know why she can suddenly see the dead. Unfortunately, they won’t tell her. In fact, none of them will speak to her. At all.

Abby leaves for her annual summer visit to her uncle’s house with tons of questions. The visit will give her answers the ghosts won’t - but she may not like what she finds out.

I’ve enjoyed Sonora Taylor’s short fiction. She’s very good at fully developing characters and making the reader empathize with them in just a few pages, so it came as no surprise to me when I read this longer work that — with more room to play — she would shine in that regard. Like an orchestra conductor, she plays with your emotions, investing the reader in not just the main character, but the entire family. She also does a masterful job of misdirection. What at first might seem like a fun take on The Sixth Sense becomes something else entirely. At its core, Seeing Things is a modern-day callback to the traditional gothics from which horror, as a genre, sprung. It’s suspenseful, creepy, and the perfect weekend read. It’s also an excellent introductory work to Sonora’s stuff. Available in paperback and eBook and highly recommended for fans of ghost stories and high weirdness.
