Mary and I babysat and dogsat for author Wesley Southard and his wife last night, and had the best time. I took the dog out for a run while Mary and their four-year-old read books and played a game. And later, the four-year-old — who is whip smart — challenged me to a counting contest. He won by correctly counting from one to forty-nine. I lost by counting from one to J and then one to potato, and then one to green. He insisted that those were not numbers.

You may notice some tweaks here on the website. Gone are the dropdown menus for books and comics, and the subdicsions of Fiction, Nonfiction, As Editor, etc. they’ve now been consolidated into pages labeled Books and Comics. Let me know if you like that better, how it looks on your phone or computer, etc.
I’m also going to add an index page for all of the Women In Horror Year posts. Hopefully today.
Speaking of which…

Women In Horror Year: Day 22
Unclaimed Property by Cat Delani
When Mallory discovers there is an inheritance waiting for her, she doesn't realize it means going home. As the situation spins out of control, it becomes clear she inherited much more than she bargained for. To accept would change everything-but should she?
Cat Delani told me last year that her influences are Red Lagoe and Laurel Hightower, which made me pause and reflect upon the fact that a generation of writers whom I think of as “the new kids” are now influencing a newer generation of writers starting to come up behind them. With this novella, her first published work, Cat Delani takes those influences to heart, and in the process, will break your heart. This was a deeply personal work, inspired by childhood trauma, and she does a masterful job of taking those lifelong fears and transforming them into something that will terrify everyone. One hell of a debut from a promising voice who (hopefully) has much more to write for us in years to come. Unclaimed Property is available in paperback and eBook.
