Quarterly New Reader Orientation

My name is Brian Keene. I’m 45, single, the father of two boys, and enjoy fishing, astronomy, target shooting, and reading. I collect books, bourbon, and cigars. I live in the backwoods river bottoms of Pennsylvania. I identify myself as an Agnostic and a Libertarian who leans right on fiscal issues and left on social issues. I write books and comics — horror and crime, mostly, with the occasional divergence into sociopolitical commentary, westerns, science-fiction, etc. While most of my work is original, I’ve also written for such properties as Doctor Who, Hellboy, and Superman.

My most recent books are (in paperback) Earthworm Gods and Earthworm Gods: Selected Scenes From the End of the World, and (for the Kindle, Nook, and Kobo) Scratch. My most recent comic book is The Last Zombie: Before the After #2. For a complete list of all my books, including links to purchase them, CLICK HERE. Several movies based on my work have been made or are in the process of being made. The two most recent are Ghoul (due on DVD in just a few short weeks) and Dark Hollow (slated to begin filming next Spring). For a complete list of all the movies based on my work, their status, etc. please CLICK HERE.

I also host Jobs In Hell, a Tumblr offering inspirational quotes for writers, illustrators, poets, musicians, filmmakers, and other artists. CLICK HERE to view it.

If you want to ask me a question, your best bet is to either post a comment here on this website, or ask me via Twitter. Indeed, Twitter is my preferred method of communication with just about everyone, and will get you the quickest answer. I can also be found on Facebook, YouTube, and LibraryThing, and my publisher hosts a message board for me here. If you wish to send me something in the mail, the address is PO Box 281 Craley, PA 17312. Due to the high volume of mail I receive, I cannot guarantee a response.

New Ink & Old Video

Paul “Noigel” Synuria, who moderates my message board at The Slaughter House, got a new tattoo last week — Noigel from my novel Urban Gothic. I think the tattoo artist did a great job in replicating Alan Clark’s cover art. And Urban Gothic isn’t the only one of my books to decorate Paul’s skin. He also has Saten from Running With The Devil inked on his arm.

By now, you’ve probably seen the video of me reading “Fast Zombies Suck”. While browsing YouTube, I came across this 2004 news report from a Virginia-based cable station. I remember this signing well. The Rising had been out in paperback for about six months. If you want to see what Mary or myself looked like nearly a decade ago, fast forward to around the 1:28 mark.

Too Good Not To Share

The first picture, courtesy of August Ragone, is pretty self-explanatory.

The second picture, courtesy of Christy White, captures author Maurice Broaddus in his natural state.

While I have your attention, there are less than 25 copies of Clickers vs. Zombies left. Click here to get one. And don’t forget that Ghoul is back in print. Click here to get it in paperback or audio.

Off Hours

Got home from New Hampshire last night. Spending time with my toddler for three days. Heading for Portland, Oregon this Thursday until next Monday, attending BizarroCon. Stop by if you’re in the area.

There are still copies of Is There A Demon In You available for purchase. This new anthology, which features a novella by me (starring Levi from A Gathering of Crows and Ghost Walk) is shipping now, and makes a wonderful holiday present. It also features novellas by Wrath James White, Mary SanGiovanni, and Nate Southard. You can pay via PayPal, credit card, check or money order. Overseas orders are also welcome. Click here to order.

Photo copyright Kelli Owen, 2011The new Deadite Press trade paperback editions of Ghoul, Dark Hollow, and The Cage should go on sale in the next week or two.

Author Kelli Owen, who is sleeping on my couch for a little while, secretly snapped this pic of what I do with my toddler’s plastic Army men in my off hours, and then Tweeted it.

And this is why I have now banned Kelli from sleeping on my couch and consigned her to the laundry room, right between the litter box and the washing machine…

Earthquake Ghosts

DC Comics has cancelled the publication of several previously-announced trade paperbacks, including DOOM PATROL: FIRE AWAY. I have no information on why or whether it will be rescheduled, because I found out from the internet.

Speaking of the internet, Kasey Lansdale and Damien Maffei created an official Twitter account and Facebook page for the forthcoming CASTAWAYS movie. Please Follow and Like if you are so inclined.

I was working on CLICKERS VS. ZOMBIES yesterday when the earthquake occurred. Turtle was upstairs taking his afternoon nap. The house didn’t shake, but it creaked. I thought the sound was footsteps. Assuming he was awake, I went upstairs only to find him sitting up in bed looking scared and dazed. He hadn’t gotten out of bed. Given my vocation, I immediately decided that what I’d heard was a ghost, and my new house was haunted, and the ghostly footsteps woke him up. It wasn’t until my ex-wife got here a few minutes later (as per our extended family’s National Disaster Emergency Plan) that I found out it had been an earthquake.

Changes

There are going to be some changes around here over the next month, so if you’re just waking up, grab a cup of coffee and read this carefully.

At this stage in my life, I want to do less, not more. And yet, due to a number of factors, most of them financial and most of them caused by the aftermath of the Dorchester meltdown, I find myself back to writing two-books at a time, plus comic scripts, and having very little free time for my sons, my fiancee, or my friends. That sort of output was a lot easier when I was 30 than it is at 43. Continue reading

I HATE BRIAN KEENE by Tim Wick

My good friend Tim Wick (member of The Dregs) participated in this year’s CONvergence Con Iron Artist event. In Iron Artist, a group of artists have approximately half an hour to create an original composition (painting, sculpture, sequential comic page, etc) based on “ingredients” provided by a guest. This year, I was that guest, and the ingredients I provided were snippets from Castaways, Jack’s Magic Beans, Doom Patrol #16, Clickers III: Dagon Rising, and a canker sore shaped like our good friend, DC Comics artist Christopher Jones.

As one of the contestants, Tim’s art was the following beat poem, which incorporates ingredients from all of the books mentioned above, as well as the canker sore. It’s called… I Hate Brian Keene*. Continue reading
