UPDATES: Top 10, Lifetimers, & Manuscript Reviews

1. Top Ten of 2012: Because many of you are asking, yes, I’ll be posting my picks for the Top Ten Books of 2012 at the end of the month. Between now and then, take a look back at last year’s Top Ten list or previous year’s Top Ten lists.

2. Lifetime Subscribers: As previously noted, Thunderstorm Books will now be shipping all of your packages to you. That transition is now complete, and your first packages shipped today. This shipment contains comic books and graphic novels. A second package, containing trade paperbacks, will ship sometime in January (once I have received them all from Deadite and signed them). If you were already a customer of Thunderstorm Books, and are also a Brian Keene Lifetime Subscriber, an tracking number has been emailed to you. If you are not a previous customer of Thunderstorm, but are a Keene Lifetime Subscriber, and would like to receive future shipping notifications, please email Paul at Thunderstorm. (Note to scammers: Paul has a full list of names for the subscribers, so if you’re not on it, don’t even try it).

3. Professional Manuscript Review: Those of you who sent manuscripts for review. I am deep into the process now, and plan to have notes, etc. back to you by the end of January. Thanks for your patience!

Catching Up

To the left, a scale model miniature office that Mary made for my birthday. By hand. Including tiny little whiskey bottles, a tiny humidor with miniscule cigars inside, and tiny copies of every book I’ve ever written (including their covers). Again, all by hand. It’s one of the most thoughtful, delightful, moving, and creative birthday presents I’ve ever received.

Speaking of creativity, here’s an update on works in progress, upcoming releases, Lifetime Subscriptions, and the Ghoul screenplay book.

Lifetimers Update

I’m pleased to announce that I’ve entered a partnership with Thunderstorm Books. Going forward, Thunderstorm will package and ship all Brian Keene Lifetime Subscriber packages. What this means for you is more frequent shipments and better packaging. Everything else remains the same. If your address changes or a package is lost in the mail, you should still notify me, rather than Thunderstorm. The next shipment will go out soon, after we complete the transition process.

Lifetime Subscriptions Offered Again For Limited Time (UPDATED)

Several years ago, I offered a limited number of Lifetime Subscriptions. Due to popular demand, I’m going to offer ten more subscriptions. If that interests you, read on.

UPDATE: One subscription left as of 6-7-2012 (see confirmations at the bottom). Since there may be several in the mail, I will honor all that are postage stamped before 06-06-2012.

Land's Edge (in which we talk about Apocrypha, Ghoul, Maelstrom, The Last Zombie, and more)

Quiet times here at Land’s Edge (the nickname I’ve bestowed upon my fortified cabin here in a remote corner of Central Pennsylvania on the banks of the Susquehanna River). If you read this, this, and this, then you know that I’ve recently been struggling with some major life decisions and changes, so the quiet times are needed. Thanksgiving was nice. My parents, grandmother, sister, brother-in-law, and both of my sons were here — the first time we’ve had the entire family together for Thanksgiving in over 17 years. I reckon my grandfather was here in spirit. My ex-wife stopped by, as well, after dinner. Everyone had a good time, and there was none of the drama or angst that seems to come with so many of these family gatherings, for which my heart condition was glad. Continue reading

"A Head Cold In My Heart"

Camelot Books has begun shipping copies of Is There A Demon In You? There are still copies available. You can order one here. Still a few free chapbooks left, too.

It occurred to me last night that, had the heart attack killed me, my Lifetime Subscribers would be justifiably pissed off. It didn’t kill me, but it has slowed me down. Over the last two weeks, I’ve been working on The Lost Level, Hole In The World, my keynote speech for Anthocon, and editing Apocrypha. That, combined with some familial stress, has left me feeling like I did in early September. I described it to my ex-wife this morning as “a head cold on the left side of my chest”. I had a much needed and welcome respite last Saturday night. Went out with Geoff Cooper, Kelli Owen, Bob Ford, Meteornotes, Wesley Southard, Matt and Pam Blazi, and Qweequeg, and spent an evening not thinking about deadlines or family stuff. Thanks to them for the break. And thanks to Apex Book Company for being patient above and beyond reason regarding this Lost Level deadline.

KHP won’t be publishing Binky. That was another one I blew the deadline on, and they elected to exercise the contractual clause that cancels the book. I don’t blame them a bit. The fault lies entirely with me. I mailed back the advance this morning, and I wish Jerrod, S.D., and Karen all the best in the world. They’re good folks, and business is just business. So, for now, Binky is on the back-burner. I’ll finish it after I finish some of these other late books.

Lifetime Subscribers can expect their next shipment in coming weeks. Shipments start next Monday and will be staggered, so please be patient. This shipment will include the following: The Damned Highway, Dead Sea, The Last Zombie: Dead New World, and The Last Zombie: Inferno issues #2, 3, and 4 (and copies of Clickers II for those who were shorted). January’s shipment will include Kill Whitey, Castaways, Ghoul, The Cage, Dark Hollow, and The Last Zombie: Inferno #5.

I’ll be at AnthoCon in Portsmouth, New Hampshire this weekend. My schedule is here. And next weekend, I’ll be in Portland, Oregon for Bizarrocon. Hope to see some of you there. As announced previously, these will be my last two appearances for quite a while.

The Apathy of Autumn

The late, great Janis Joplin once sang “Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.” I would add that so is apathy.

Let’s talk, you and I. It’s been a long time since we’ve really done that. Oh, sure. We talk on Twitter every day, and we talk here in the comments section. And we used to chat at The Keenedom and on Facebook until the sound of white noise in those places began to overwhelm me, throbbing in my pineal gland night and day, threatening to drive me mad, and I ended up stabbing both of them with a knife so that they wouldn’t bother me anymore. This is Shoggoth Country

Hey, @NMamatas and @BrianKeene, look what came in today! on TwitpicRachel Edidin, editor of me and Nick Mamatas’s new novel THE DAMNED HIGHWAY, reports that copies have arrived in the office, which means they’ll be shipping to bookstores for their early-August release. If you haven’t pre-ordered a copy, click here to do so. Nick and I are both very excited about this book. We hope you will be, too. (Note: Lifetime subscribers will receive this book with their September packages).

PLACEHOLDER

Things will be quiet both here and at The Keenedom for the next few weeks. The World Horror Convention kicks off in Austin on Thursday. I’ll be there (here’s my schedule if you want to say Hi), as will Keenedom mod Val, and many of the forum’s other authors. Meanwhile, Keenedom mods Brandon and Noigeloverlord will be reenacting Smokey & the Bandit by driving across the country in a truck. I’ll be on the set of Ghoul after WHC.

So yeah, expect lots of activity on Twitter and TwitPic, and very little activity here. In the meantime, remember that there have been a lot of new books released in hardcover, paperback, and e-book. You can find them all by clicking here.

DELUGE: Deluge resumes at the end of May. Yes, I hear you groaning, but the good news is that when Deluge does return, it will be the final segment. I anticipate approximately a dozen more chapters, give or take, until the finale which finds Sarah, Simon, Novak, Henry, Gail and the rest of the cast floating over the submerged LeHorn’s Hollow. Will Simon open the door to the Labyrinth in time? Is Sarah’s insanity permanent? Is Earl really dead? Will Leviathan return? The answers to these questions and more will be revealed.

LIFE-TIMERS: Your next shipment is scheduled to go out the first Friday in May, provided your copies of Grave Conditions arrive by then.

WRITING: I’ll be working while on the road. These books don’t write themselves. Alone is finished. Just need to get it pre-read and edited. I’ll finish scripting The Last Zombie: Inferno #3 on the plane on Wednesday, and hope to finish up a short story for Cemetery Dance and novellas for Apex and KHP while on location in Louisiana (which is where Ghoul is being filmed).
