Entombed and Elder Statesmen

I’m honored to learn that ENTOMBED was named Best Novel of 2012 in the 3rd Annual Occult Detective Awards. Entombed is available in paperback right here (digital editions are forthcoming).

Elsewhere on the Internet, Decibel (one of my favorite reads) quoted me in a feature article about John Skipp. You can read it here. And props to Decibel and Shawn Macomber for this new column about metal and literature, which I’ve been wishing somebody would write on a regular basis since the mid-80′s.

UPDATEPALOOZA: Digitial & Print, Books & Comics

1. Deadite Press tells me that digital editions of Dark Hollow, Entombed, An Occurrence In Crazy Bear Valley, Ghost Walk, and Clickers vs. Zombies will be available “in time for Christmas”. All of them are currently available in paperback. For more information, click here.

2. The new Deadite editions of Earthworm Gods (previously published as The Conqueror Worms) and Earthworm Gods: Selected Scenes From the End of the World are off to the printer. Look for the paperbacks to go on sale in the next week or two.

3. 2013 will see Deadite switching to a new quarterly printing schedule. My official release schedule with them for next year is as follows:

Earthworm Gods II: Deluge – March – paperback and digital
The Rising and City of the Dead – June – paperback and digital
The Rising: Selected Scenes From the End of the World – September – paperback and digital
Suburban Gothic – December – paperback and digital

4. Antarctic Press’s High Plains Clickers comic series (written by myself and J.F. Gonzalez) should be out the second half of next year.

5. Thunderstorm Books’ limited collector’s edition of The Damned Highway will feature new material not available in the paperback, Nook or Kobo editions, including How Long, Oh Lord, How Long: Hunter S. Thompson and Horror by myself and Tainted Blood: H. P. Lovecraft’s Racism and Writing Lovecraftian Fiction Today by Nick Mamatas.

6. If you have questions about any other work in progress, I probably answered them here.

A Grim, Bleak, and Nihilistic Happy Place

My contributor copies of The Last Zombie: Before the After #1 arrived yesterday. Mary read it last night and commented on how grim it was. I told her that was merely the set-up, and that things were about to get very bad for our characters.

In truth, this new story-arc, and the story-arc that will follow, contain what I feel is some of the bleakest and most nihilistic stuff I’ve ever written. Ian’s continuing deterioration and the subsequent catalyst it provides for a final showdown between him and Federman, Russo and Ananti’s flashbacks (which involve everything from spousicide to a zombie chewing its way through a maternity ward), the loneliness expressed by Planters and Fulton in response to Johnson’s new relationship, the madman who now runs Chicago — these are characters and situations with decidedly unhappy endings.
