I found out about this earlier today, but was asked to sit on it until after 4pm. You can read the details here. You can click here for a complete list of stores that will be impacted.
I’m sad to note that among the outlets being shuttered are the locations in Morgantown (West Virginia) and Uniontown and Camp Hill (Pennsylvania), all three of which have always been extremely supportive of me, my work and my readers. I wish the managers of those stores — Rhonda, Steve and Jim — as well as their wonderful staff, the very best.

What can the F.U.K.U do?
I heard through the grapevine that Amazon may be buying a lot of Borders…I believe there was a mention in the latest Publisher’s Weekly. Would be cool to have a brick and mortar Amazon.
well, that is too bad. I like bookstores. but, it’s a free market of competition.
“What can the F.U.K.U do?”
Support whatever bookstores remain in your area. That’s pretty much it.
“I heard through the grapevine that Amazon may be buying a lot of Borders…”
I’ve repeatedly heard that rumor, as well (going back to BEA earlier this year). Though, when you consider Amazon’s business model, brick and mortar outlets with limited stocking capabilities seem like an odd choice. If anything, I’d look for them to experiment with kiosks at airports, etc.
Well, I did my part. Bought Ayn Rand’s ANTHEM this afternoon at a Borders store.
Looks Like Mine Is Safe For Now. SSHHHWWWEEEEWWWW!
FUCK!!!!!!!
This saddens me. Steve and Jim sorry to hear about this guys, I wish nothing but the best of luck to you guys! Some of my fondest memories growing up was going to the bookstore in the mall and some of these borders/waldenbooks were those stores. This has me extremely upset.
This saddens me deeply.
I frequented the Ashland, KY Waldenbooks and have been to the Morgantown, WV store several times. The book market is taking the same hit as every specific market–online. Same is happening with the brick & mortar music equipment shops v/s the big boys like Musican’s Friend, etc. Just can’t compete.
I hate to think that there’s nothing we can do but it feels like most of the damage is done. Perhaps it’s irreversible. “Adapt or die,” they say.
At least I still have the Huntington, WV mall Borders store. For now.
Yeah, this sucks. Two of the ones I go to (Ocean County Mall and Monmouth Mall) are closing, and this saddens me.
Dude Borders Stores rock – I love their rewards program
This is really depressing. Brian’s right. Let’s get out there and support the great stores that are left..
Man, still sucks.
With the passing of Waldenbooks I will be left with a 45 minute drive to the nearest bookstore. That’s just fucking wrong on so many levels.
We had a Borders store in the mall in the next town over close a couple or maybe a few years ago. Forget how long ago it was, but I went there all the time, now I go to Chapters. The mall turned the borders store into yet another jock clothing store; first thing I thought was… that’s just what we need, another clothing store!
Ya it figures that they are doing it just to save money. Now I will shop online because the next book store is miles away. Thanks Boarders.
I’m surprised about Morgantown. Let’s just hope York stays open. I like to buy from Amazon, but there’s nothing like hanging out in a bookstore and actually touching, previewing, and getting to know the books before you buy them.
