Blurbage

I get a lot of free books in the mail. Many of them are advance reader copies (ARCS) that publishers send to me months before the books are released, hoping for a cover blurb. Two recent reads — Paul Tremblay’s The Little Sleep and Otsuichi’s Zoo — impressed me so much that I not only blurbed them — I decided that you need to read them immediately. I’m excited about these books. I want you to be excited about them, too, because I think you’ll enjoy them. So, here are the blurbs.

The Little Sleep is an amazingly refreshing take on the standard hard-boiled crime novel. Whimsical and sardonic, fast-paced, and yet introspective and atmospheric. Impossible to put down. The crown jewel in the new noir.” Brian Keene, author of Castaways and Kill Whitey

Otsuichi’s ZOO made quite a splash in Japan, and if there is any justice in the world, it will have the same impact here thanks to this Haikasoru edition. ZOO is an exceptionally entertaining collection of speculative fiction stories. Otsuichi crosses genres and boundaries with an almost Bradbury-like style, breathing new life into familiar sci-fi and horror tropes. Haunting, emotional and thoroughly engrossing. I loved it!” Brian Keene, author of Castaways and Kill Whitey

I posted a longer, more rambling comment on the board, but Tremblay’s The Little Sleep is, to me, the most unique detective novel to come along since James Crumley’s The Last Good Kiss, and, seeing as how that Crumley book is quite possibly my all-time favorite novel, I don’t hand out that compliment easily.

  2. I’m proud as heck that you liked it, Brian. And thanks for posting!

It was early and I’d had no coffee and the baby was demanding my attention.

    Or something. ;>)

  4. I was referring to the idea that your blurbs were well thought out and interesting when what they are looking for is a one liner to put on the book cover.

So, I cut out just the one liner.

Want to blurb my next novel? LOL.

Ah, now I see. It was early and I’d had no coffee and the baby was demanding my attention. Or something… :>)

But yeah, you’ve always got to give that one-liner. Blurb doesn’t work without it.
