Coincidence?

Exhibit #1: Omar bin Laden, son of Osama bin Laden

Omar bin Laden, son of Osama bin Laden, who was involved in the murder of thousands.

Exhibit #2: Nickolaus Pacione, infamous bane of horror writers everywhere.

Nickolaus Pacione, who has stalked/harrassed dozens of authors, editors, artists, publishers, and fans.

Footage of what Osama bin Laden was watching at home.

And before anyone says how mean I am, it should be noted that Mr. Pacione has repeatedly threatened many authors and their families over the years. Therefore, the occasional public service message is in order.

I was going to say that it is beneath a man of your professional stature to take such easy pot-shots at an illiterate stink-tart, but I was so convulsed with laughter that this is what I typed: jdhyen nhdeijde mjdkinde3 jshdurk cjkwe nnswd dki

Is the thin beard the 2011 equivalent of the pedo-stache? Bad guys love rocking the thin beard.

I just hope it doesn’t turn out that George Bluth built Osamas hideout. You can only escape light treason so many times…

I know Nick. I friggin’ went to high school with him. I practically dumped a load in my pants when I saw the post about him on this site. One of my best friends occassionally still communicates with Nick, as this friend is sort of fascinated by “odd” characters. Occasionally my friend will relay some incredibly bizarre story to me about Nick, and we will laugh at the strangeness of it all. Nick was a complete and utter outcast in high school. He wasn’t a dork or a nerd, but something else, something completely abjected, something completely not-cool weird — sort of half retard/half mentally ill. He was brutally picked on by EVERYONE. He dated a chick at one point but she was also seemingly half-retarded. It was a horrible match for both and no-one won on that deal but the people who made fun of them. I remember once that a kid in the locker room picked Nick up by the back of his whitey-tighties and, in full mega-wedgie mode, literally carried the practically naked Nick out of the locked-room into the fully populated gym. Years later Nick developed an interest in horror, grew the hair, the facial hair. At one point he moved to Iowa, got stabbed in the head by some kids, got a girl pregnant, and then moved back to his grandma’s in Illinois where he lives to this day. I remember a story my friend told me about a time he was walking with Nick through Cabrini Green (!) and, after being harassed by some ghetto dude, Nick flipped the guy onto the concrete. I was his Facebook friend at one point — Nick had remembered from high school that I’d loved horror — but I kept getting post after post from him, littering my page, and he had these ugly, unpleasant arguments with other writers, so I eventually blocked him. Nick at one point asked me to contribute a short story to an anthology he was doing, but his restrictions/qualifications were such that I wasn’t interested (no sex, no swearing, no gore!). I was also shocked when I found a bunch of Youtube videos where people had commented/given commentary on Nick’s anti-social behavior. I had no idea Nick’s negative exploits had reached even the attention of Brian Keene. Nick’s story is a sad story. It is too bad that Nick’s obvious love of horror could not have translated into a positive, productive life for him; but, he obviously has not conquered the demons which have always haunted him…

“Nick’s story is a sad story.”

I agree. It *is* a sad story. And I feel that his mother shares at least 50% of the blame.

After the last time Nick threatened my life, I spoke with several people from the Morris Sheriff, and gained quite a bit of background on him. It seems his mother moved to Florida and left him in the care of his elderly grandparents, one of whom is quite ill and the other of which supposedly suffers from dementia or Alzheimer’s. With no responsible guardianship or supervision, he is basically allowed to run rampant.

It’s a shame, not only for the community, but for Nick as well, that his mother refuses to get him the extensive psychiatric and pharmaceutical help that he so desperately needs.

I certainly pity him, but at the same time, I also know that we can’t have him running around threatening to kidnap rival authors’ children, or threatening to kill people, etc. Hopefully, someone in his family will do the responsible thing and get him some help before it’s too late.

I know many people who suffer from mental illness. Many of them, however, are fully integrated and productive, are loving, kind, and generous. To prosper and thrive — many of them will maintain — it was necessary to 1) embrace the fact that they were ill, 2) actively participate in talk therapy, 3) take medication, and 4) participate and be a member of a meaningful, supportive community of friends, loved ones, and supporters. It seems that Nick has embraced none of the above requirements. It also appears that he has none of the support/guidance he obviously requires to obtain psychiatric help. I had no idea that his mother was still alive. Although she may have been one of his only chances of getting help, it appears she has abandoned him — and the world — to his illness. Who knows if Nick even has access to healthcare. Probably not. When we as a society ignore mental health problems — and stigmative them — it only externalizes the costs to society at large. And when we put the onus of healthcare care squarely on the shoulders of individual families, and family member’s don’t step up, then we get stories like Nick’s. I had no idea as to the extend of his threats and abuse. Since such threats constitute “assault,” he will probably end up being placed in the largest mental illness warehouse system our country provides –prison…

Saying Omar was involved with 9/11 is out of line. He may be an ass, but he has long been on record as opposing his father’s ways.

Wow, thanks for opening my eyes to this. The guy’s been friendly to me, albeit odd. I guess some of us have sides we reserve to a select few. I mean, I’m sure someone’s perception of even Hitler was at odds with the truth, colored by having only been shown his goodwill.

~ Brian, I’ve read most of your work! Cheers to your hard-earned success!

    Best, HORNS
