List of Professionals Endorsing the Dorchester Boycott

0Last week, myself and several other Dorchester-Leisure authors discussed the idea of calling for a boycott of the company due to the reasons detailed here. Yesterday, four of us took the chance. We asked our readers and peers to join the cause. We weren’t sure who, if anyone, would respond. Twenty-four hours later, in addition to the thousands of fans and readers who have pledged to join the boycott, what follows is a list of professionals in the field — from across all spectrum of genres — who have also pledged their support. There are also a number of professionals who have pledged their support behind the scenes, but can’t add their name to the public list for various reasons. In short, thanks. And that thanks isn’t just from me. It’s from every author who has been screwed over by this company. Today, we are not horror writers or fans. We are not western writers or fans. We are not romance writers or fans. We are, as Robert Swartwood said yesterday, a community.

Note: This list is NOT complete. Every time we update, we get a dozen more names. If you are a professional who wishes to voice your support, please do so in the comments section below.

As both a devoted Keene reader and an independent author, I’m totally in support of this. We as authors already face enough bullshit without having to worry about companies like Dorchester trying to make a quick and easy buck off our sweat and blood — behind our backs, no less — and then acting like we’ll just go away if they ignore us long enough.

To hell with those bastards. GIVE ‘EM HELL, BRIAN!

Count me in as a supporting author. If there is one thing we writers do well, it’s support one another.

You can count me in for the boycott. As a freelance editor and proofreader (and recently published indie author myself) I’m well aware of how difficult it can be to make a living in this industry at the best of times. When your publishing house, an entity you should be able to trust completely, starts deceiving you and denying you access to funds that are rightfully yours that’s even worse.

I’ll repost this to my blog and inform colleagues about the situation.

Count me in. I thank God daily Dorcester rejected the book I submitted to that contest they ran just before the implosion. Belfire Press jumped on it like a loose ball in the end zone, and Smarter Than the Average Werewolf will come out under their imprint next year. Really dodged a bullet there, I think.

You can add me to the list as Booktweeting, if you like. My followtariat may or may not take up the call, but there are several thousand of them, and only a thousand or so seem to be spammers–the rest are apparently real people who like to read books!

Destroy The Brain would like to be on the list of supporters and will re-post your call to arms for a boycott on the website very soon!

For whatever it’s worth, you have my support. A few years back it was my ambition to be published by Leisure. Not any more.

Brian, please add my name to the list of authors supporting the boycott. What they did to their stable of authors sickens me. In the end, right before I bailed (3 weeks before the ship sank), I was outright *lied* to about several concerns I had about sales, return percentages, and digital rights, to name but three. In none of my contracts for the 5 books they published was *anything* mentioned about giving them electronic rights. And thank you for bringing up the subject of advances and cough-cough royalties. (“What are these royalty things of which you speak?” asked the author to the all-powerful editor. “You need not concern yourself with such details,” replied the editor (as authorized by the publisher). You need only go over to the nearest corner, drop your pants, and bend over. We shall be happy to provide you with a pillow on which to bite.”)

Oh, yeah — do put me on the list, my friend.

Brian, thanks for your important work on this. I’m trying to regain my book and e-book rights from Dorchester. Count me in on the boycott.

I found out about this from my friend, Kevin Lucia. This whole thing is a horror story in and of itself. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Brian, my fellow zombie scribe, I’m sorry to hear what you’re going through. We’ve all been there to some extent, but not at this level, so, you know, fuck Dorchester. Add me to the list of authors. Fight the power, brother.

Count me in on this! As a budding writer, just because we do it for the art doesn’t mean we shouldn’t get paid for it!

A lot of people I consider good friends have gotten screwed by this Dorchester situation. I tried to believe this was simply a case of carelessness; putting out e-books of titles you never bought e-rights for, on books you’ve lost the rights to, is no accident. It will take more that platitudes to make this right.

I, of course, support the ban.

Crimespree Magazine supports the boycott. Dorchester is stealing from authors and that can not stand.

FUCK Dorchester. I’m glad that they didn’t pick up my latest novel. It is now with a respectful company.

Count Graveside Tales and Graveside Books in as well.

Truly enjoyed Dorchester’s books over the years. They introduced me to many of the fine writers on this list.

Count me in on any method to get Dorchester to pay my royalties. I haven’t received my kindle royalties for two years. I’m damn glad they only have two of my books and not all 16.

i was surprised to hear what dorchester was doing to its authors. i should not have been surprised because i had ordered WILDERNESS#65 and #66 and they have not arrived as of yet.also,i had noticed that WILDERNESS had stopped coming out in single volumns. a world without david[thompson]robbins and brian keene is like a world without college football, beer and military unit reunions.dorchester sounds like they belong in the old soviet union.

I am so sorry for what you and other authors are going through. Indie authors have a hard enough time doing everything on their own without having their publisher screw them over!

I run a review blog “Pinky’s Pub” (pinkyspub.blogspot.com) and a Free NookBook blog, the “Free NookBook Summary Blog” (freenookbooksummary.blogspot.com) and will definitely be joining this boycott! I will NOT support Dorchester in ripping off their authors! Guess they never heard the phrase “don’t bite the hand that feeds you” huh?

Please add my review site “Pinky’s Pub” to the list of reviewers boycotting Dorchester Publishing. I have posted the article by Dread Central, “Dread Central Joins Boycott of Dorchester Publishing”, on both of my blogs and will post it anywhere and everywhere I can find! If there is anything I can do to help with this mission, please do not hesitate to contact me. Again, I am very sorry.

    Sincerely,

I have a review blog and am only just hearing about this. I’m so sorry to hear that a publisher would do this. If there is anything I can do please let me know. Have there been any further developments?

I pledge my support both as writer and reader. When ink conjoins with the page, time, spirit and energy spent yields not to unjust deceit. The pen is mighty, as are the readers, the writers and this cause!!! Let the battles begin. I am in!

As an independent writer, reviewer, and artist myself, I find this entire saga to be infuriating. Writers create to share their art with the world. Unfortunately every once in awhile a situation like this happens (albeit not on such a grand scale). I fully support the boycott and hope for a just and speedy recourse for all the writers stuck within this quagmire.
