J. F. Gonzalez reports that Buddy Martinez passed away on Monday, November 30. Buddy was the co-editor/publisher of Iniquities Magazine and was at one time a co-publisher of Gauntlet Press. He also occasionally dabbled in short horror fiction — most recently, his story “Anonymous” appeared in John Skipp’s Mondo Zombie.
Ellen Datlow reports that Janet Fox also passed away recently. Janet was an accomplished genre author, but is perhaps best remembered as the editor/publisher of Scavenger’s Newsletter, a monthly zine listing submission guidelines for fantasy, horror and science-fiction magazines and publishers. This was what we used before the internet came along. Suffice to say, my entire generation owes at least part of our success to Janet’s efforts.

Oh, that’s sad. I remember Buddy and Janet. May they rest in peace.
That’s so sad. I only met Buddy once, a long time ago, but he made an impression. And Scav’s Newsletter was required reading.
That is a shame. Scavenger’ Newsletter was an indispensible resource back in the day of print.

My uncle Buddy was my inspiration, he taught me how to draw super heroes when I was 5. He was the one that sparked my interest in film making as well as recording & producing music. He taught me every Kiss song he could. We loved comics, sci-fi and horror and I’ve always identified with him more than any person in the world and I’ll never be able to watch a movie, play a song or draw another comic without knowing he is right there with me ‘till the day we meet again.

Carrie and Perry, I am very sorry for your loss. I met Buddy three times, and enjoyed the time spent with him. He was funny and gregarious and full of stories. And he touched a lot of people in this industry.
Buddy was a one of a kind person. He was my bass player in the 80′s, and was extremely talented and intelligent. He was always upbeat and his laugh was uplifting and infectious. I had some great times hanging out, rehearsing and sharing the stage with him. He will truely be missed…
Hi Brian,
Thanks for your post, which ended up inspiring this tribute piece that my friend Jeff VanderMeer was kind enough to publish.
Best,
Dan
That’s a wonderful tribute, Dan. Thanks for sharing it. Care if I link to it?
